Weekly Update 05/10/2022

Greetings!

Having done a few of these updates over the years (formerly on paper via USPS and now via email), I’ve mulled over many details of church life experienced and anticipated. I shall not use this space to reminisce today but to anticipate the week and weeks ahead.

Tomorrow night we continue the study in R. C. Sproul’s book The Mystery of the Trinity. What a helpful study! There’s ample neglect on one hand, and confusion on the other about the person and work of the Holy Spirit. I’m glad that we can reflect together on the Spirit. Read over chapter 5 and come prepared to join in. Our teenagers are studying Greg Gilbert’s Who is Jesus? This book has been translated in many languages (lots and lots) and is being used of the Lord to teach thousands about the person and work of Jesus. I’m so glad the students are digging into this one. Pray that the Lord will use both books and accompanying discussion to bear much fruit in our lives.

If you’re interested in membership at South Woods we’ll be having four classes during the four Sundays of June during the Bible Study Group hour, 9:00–10:00. These classes are part of the step toward becoming covenant members of South Woods. Let one of the pastors know that you would like to attend starting June 5th. Of course, if you have questions, please don’t hesitate to ask whatever may be helpful to you.

The tender language of the Apostle Paul in 1 Thessalonians 2 gave us a great encouragement to live as Christians as we go forth bearing the good news to others. Pastor Matt helped us to see how in the provision of Jesus, we are able to pace our lives in walking worthy of the God who has graciously called us to His kingdom and glory. You can read or listen to the message here.
We’ll be out of our Acts series again this week, as I will finish up my pastoral ministry at South Woods by preaching Revelation 5. We’ve looked at this passage numerous times over my 35 years in the pulpit here, but each one takes a little different angle. That will be the case this time as well, as I want us to consider the pictures in Revelation 5 that beckon us to follow Jesus. Pray for this time that the Holy Spirit (or, as John put it, the seven Spirits of God sent out into all the earth) will manifest His power and presence among us.

I’m grateful for you and the years of your faithfulness to the body, encouraging my family and me, and serving Christ together. May the Lord grant much of His favor upon this body in the years ahead!

Warmly,Phil N.
