Weekly Update 07/27/2021

Greetings!

Welcome back Matt, Julie, Owen, Eden, and Andrew! We welcome the Sligers back after finishing up a sabbatical in the northeast. We’re thankful for that time of refreshing that they were able to have. Pray for Matt as he prepares to preach on Sunday. Catching up after being away for a month is a challenge! So do pray!

It’s great to be back after spending a week teaching at Southeastern Seminary and then preaching at Concord Baptist Church in Chattanooga for Pastor David King’s 20th anniversary. By God’s grace, I was able to do 28 expositions from Romans 3–8, with one in Romans 12, each about 20 minutes long. Plus, Keith Whitfield and I did ten pastoral chats, all recorded for an online class on the doctrine of sanctification offered in the fall semester. Thank you for your prayers. As the Lord brings it to mind, pray that the class will have lifelong impact on the students who will be taking it in another month. The time in Chattanooga with Pastor David and the Concord church were really encouraging. He’s a dear friend and an exceptional pastor. Joining for that time of honoring him was extra special, as I’ve watched the church’s revitalization over the past 15 years.

I’ve heard such encouraging reports of the time of worship at South Woods on Sunday and of Pastor Chris’ exposition from Acts 11. I was praying for that time and thinking about the joy of gathering with our church family. I’m looking forward to worshiping here on Sunday!

We get started with a new STINT class tomorrow night, with the LADIES being first up to discuss Matt Merker’s book, Corporate Worship: How the Church Gathers as God’s People. Worship is central to all that we are as followers of Christ, and particularly, to our worship gatherings. We’ll learn some things about worship as we read and discuss. We’ll also have some things affirmed for us that will spur us in our worship. Ladies, join us tomorrow night at 6:30 for this time of study. Teenagers will be finishing up Devoted to God, chapter 10, at the same time. We do have copies of Corporate Worship on the book rack.

We have a new members class starting August 8th through August 29th, meeting at 9:00 a.m. Please let one of the pastors know of your interest in attending, if you’ve not already done so. The membership class is part of our requirement to join South Woods, although attending does not obligate one to join. We work through who we are as a church, what we believe, and how we engage one another in living out the gospel.

You can listen to or check out the manuscript for Pastor Chris’ sermon here.

See you Sunday!

Warmly,
Phil N.
