Let's continue holding those believers before the Lord.

I trust that you were encouraged by the other aspects of this past Sunday too, as the ladies gathered during the Bible Study hour to consider things ahead, and as we sat under the faithfully preached word from Hebrews 1.

If you happened to miss that sermon, you can read or watch it here.

This Sunday we'll finish Hebrews 1 and then fellowship around the Lord's Table. Speaking of fellowship, I told the deacons this weekend that I thought last Wednesday's meal was the best Wednesday meal we'd had in years. And I didn't mean merely the food, though it was certainly excellent. What I meant––primarily––was the evident spirit of the body as they gladly served one another. Of course, there's a vast difference between a gathering and a glad gathering. Last Wednesday's fellowship was the latter, reminding me of Psalm 122:1.

If you haven't signed up for Chick-fil-A at tomorrow night's meal, please do. If that plan doesn't work for you, as always we encourage you to bring your own. You've demonstrated clearly over the past month that it's not about the food at all.

After that time together, at 6:30 we'll continue considering Bible intake from Don Whitney's helpful volume. I so appreciated Andy emphasizing the grace we receive as we participate in the spiritual disciplines during last week's study. While the adults consider that, the students will continue studying what the Scriptures say about the new birth as the younger children press on in Wisdom Wednesdays.

We'll look forward to seeing many of you then!

Matt

As I was thinking about that people group this past weekend, I recalled fondly one of the highlights of my life, that is, getting to visit with dear friends the part of that country where many of those Assyrians live.

As I was thinking about that people group this past weekend, I recalled fondly one of the highlights of my life, that is, getting to visit with dear friends the part of that country where many of those Assyrians live. Then, like you, Monday morning I awoke to devastating images of destruction. As the days go by, the number of casualties tragically continues to rise. As many of you know, we've had former members live in that part of the world. We continue to stay in contact with workers there. Thankfully, I did receive emails from leaders in that region saying that none of our personnel were killed. We're grateful. Yet, I also received notes saying that dear friends of our workers had lost family members and houses and were now figuring out places to stay in the midst of a brutally cold season. If you would, join me in interceding for those in southeast Turkey and in northern Syria profoundly affected by this series of earthquakes. I found this piece to be helpful in praying yesterday: https://www.thegospelcoalition.org/article/earthquake-turkey-2023-pray/
By the way, Send Relief––our 2per focus this month––is mobilizing their international team to serve the region in the days ahead.

This coming Sunday we'll observe the Lord's Supper together and continue through the book of James, considering what James calls pure and undefiled religion (James 1:26–2:13). Some of my fellow elders encouraged me to do James a few months back. Over the past few weeks, I've been increasingly thankful they did. The Scriptures are, indeed, the law of liberty. If you missed Sunday's sermon on "The Mirror of the Word," you can read or watch it here: (James 1:18-25)
As we consider membership issues on Lord's Supper Sunday, upon completion of the membership class and interview by our elders, this weekend we will vote on Mary Margaret Kirkpatrick for membership. She gave sound testimony of her love for and trust in Christ alone for salvation during her membership interview. Therefore, the elders unanimously recommend her to you for a vote this Sunday. We continue to be thankful for the Lord's adding to our number. There are a few other people in the process that we look forward to presenting for membership in the next month or so.

Due to last week's cancellation, the adults will consider both chapters 6 and 7 tomorrow night of Crabtree's book. Though we don't do this often, there will be 25 minutes of one teacher for one of those chapters; and then––à la Mid–South Coliseum circa early 90s––that first teacher will tag someone else to cover the other chapter. We will not play "Also sprach Zarathustra" at any point. Wisdom Wednesdays and How to Eat Your Bible will both meet at 6:30. Chick–fil–A immediately precedes at 5:30.

The past few Sundays have made it clear that many of you are both eager to hear the word (in Romans and James) and to be with one another for the purposes of encouragement. So, in the spirit of 1 Thessalonians 4: Now as to the love of the brethren, you have no need for anyone to write to you, for you yourselves are taught by God to love one another; for indeed you do practice it toward all the brethren who are in all Macedonia. But we urge you, brethren, to excel still more (1 Thess. 4:9–10).

All of Christ's goodness to you today, as you look intently at the perfect law––the law of liberty––abide by it, and receive the blessing promised those that do.

Matt

Then, this weekend many of South Woods' homes will be opened to others for the sake of fellowship, prayer, and encouragement. In all of those cases, so many of you clearly see that the resources you've been given are good gifts from the Lord to be stewarded for His honor. Our homes might be found in a cul–de–sac, but they don't merely function as cul–de–sacs; they're conduits for blessing others.

In a similar vein, statements that reflect 2022's financial giving have been mailed out. That's yet another way this church body stewards and redirects the resources they've been given for the advance of the gospel and the good of God's people. Chris and I were telling David just last week how faithful the benevolence offering has been for years now.
Part of this is because the Lord's made us aware that "all good things come from above" (Is the song in your head?). We looked at that challenging but clarifying passage (James 1:13–18) on Sunday morning. If you missed it, you can read (all 6 pages!) or watch it here: (Consider the Source, James 1:13-18)
This coming Sunday we'll continue in Romans 14 in our Bible Study Groups, and I'll press on in James 1 with yet another compelling image, that of the person that looks at his or her face in a mirror and immediately forgets what he or she looks like. It's a fascinating picture of being a hearer but not a doer of the word. And yet, as we've seen, James loves to contrast ideas, so he'll also point us to the blessing that comes to those that look intently into the law of liberty (what a phrase!).
Verse 18 can get lost in the middle of all of those memorable images, but be reminded: The Giver of all good things chose––freely––to bring us forth (to give us life!) by the word of truth, the gospel of His dear Son. Chris rightly showed us both the connection and the context. And I trust you were helped as I was. If you missed that sermon, you can watch or read it here: (Faith Works: The Gift of Wisdom Under Trials, James 1:5-12)
After studying our next passage in James (1:12–18) this morning, I'm confident that James doesn't move into an entirely new arena. When trials come into our lives, what else shows up? Temptation. We're tempted to give up; we're tempted to do something other than what God's instructed; we're tempted in all kinds of ways. James addresses the source of that temptation in this Sunday's passage, as well as reasserting his emphasis on who God is: the Giver of all good things.

What a thoughtful discussion we had last week when considering Practicing Affirmation. After I've prepared for a class like that, and then you all say things I've not come close to considering, it's a good reminder of the Spirit's work. Debbie put together an aesthetically–pleasing sermon schedule that is attached to this email.

Speaking of schedules, we know yours is always filling up. So, here are a couple of important dates for those under 18 (and those that parent them). First, David will be leading our teenagers on their annual pilgrimage to Louisville from June 26–29. I wrote this brief promo years ago for D3 Youth Conferences, and I continue to stand by it: "Our church, and the parents at our church, desire to faithfully teach our teenagers the gospel. When I'm looking for a Youth Conference––rather than something that subverts that which is taught in the home or the local church––I'm looking for others to come alongside and teach the same truths we do with clarity and fervor. Bottom line: D3 helps to accomplish what our parents pray for their children and what we desire for them as a local church." So, parents of teenagers, mark those dates down.

And parents of younger children, Chris set the VBS date this summer for July 19–21. This year's theme is "Things Hidden: A Study On Kingdom Parables." Year after year, Chris and Jessica rally and organize the adults here to sacrificially serve those we long to see believe the gospel. Last year's Vacation Bible School was remarkably enjoyable and fruitful. So, mark those dates down. We're eager to see the Lord continue His faithful work in our children.

Tomorrow night I'll lead a discussion on chapter 3 in Crabtree's Practicing Affirmation. Affirmation is a preview of the world to come as well, when words aren't used in duplicitous ways, for flattery, or for deceit, but always for the purpose of building up. The teenagers will discuss chapter 1 of their book on consuming the Bible. I love that idea/image. And our children will press on in Wisdom Wednesdays. Continue to pray for all of the faithful volunteers instructing our children on Wednesday nights.

We'll see many of you tomorrow night!

Matt

We wanted to be part of, and learn from, a culture of discipleship like that.

Speaking of, we're so grateful to have David Johnson in the office with us today, eager to lend a hand in our efforts to make disciples at South Woods. Make sure to read the introduction, students! We had a wonderful initial class last week with the adults on Practicing Affirmation. The word "practicing" in that title is masterful, as it's certainly not a skill learned overnight. The next verse––verse 3––helps explain how we might do such a countercultural thing, having joy in trials. And the following verse tells us the goal of it. We'll also observe the Lord's Supper together. A number of folks from our recent membership class will be joining on Sunday too. Let's pray that the Lord might nourish and encourage us during that time together.

Tomorrow night: Chick–fil–a at 5:30; children's, youth, and adult classes at 6:30. We also thought through what might pair well with the section of Romans we're currently in. So, this coming Sunday we'll begin a series through the book of James, an eminently practical book full of memorable imagery. I'll overview the book this weekend, hopefully reminding us of what the Lord said through James and why it matters.

If you're looking for resources on the book of James, I'd commend Curtis Vaughan (Founders Study Guide), Doug Moo (Pillar Commentary/a bit more technical), David Gibson's, "Radically Whole," (Yes, same guy that wrote, Living Life Backward), and your fellow church member Sylvia Dickson's co–authored work with Tom Nettles entitled A Commentary on James. There are more, and I'm not all the way through any of those, but I've enjoyed them thus far. I'm eagerly anticipating looking together into the mirror of God's Word over the next number of weeks, and doing so with humility so that we might receive that Word which is able to save your souls (James 1:21).

I mentioned on Sunday that I'd thought about the book Practicing Affirmation over a hundred times since 2014 when we last studied it. Sunday afternoon I thought, "Was that one of those preacher exaggerations?" I actually think I lowballed it. In preparing to teach chapter 1 tomorrow night, I re–read it last week and thought, "This book has counsel for relationships, for work, for parenting, for church–life, etc. that is unlike any other book I've read on encouragement/affirmation." We sold out of copies on Sunday (which is excellent!), but more are on the way.

The teenagers will join the adult study tomorrow night, as next Tuesday (10th) David Johnson will begin serving at South Woods as our Discipleship Minister to Students and Families. It's been a joy to have the Johnsons worshipping with us over the holidays. And it's been a joy to see you all welcome them as you have. I'm grateful they'll soon be among us in a more official way, focusing on students and families as they join our mission to make disciples that joyfully serve Christ together. Please continue to pray for David and April as they settle in (they landed right as the snow/ice did). And pray for David as he jumps right in next Wednesday (11th), teaching the teenagers about how to read, study, and enjoy the Bible, a great topic for the beginning of the year. We're thrilled!

Tomorrow night: One and Only Q, Wisdom Wednesdays, Practicing Affirmation, and choir practice. See many of you then!

Matt

As I've said prior, there is no higher art form––no greater sound––on the planet than a room full of voices glorying in the coming of Christ. How great our joy! I told Jim afterward how much I appreciated both the approach––a commitment to excellence––and the clear purpose: worship. That commitment to excellence extended to the adult choir, the instrumentalists, those that read the Scriptures, the gifted crew running sound, the children's choir (that song was hard!), and the faithful members setting up for the fellowship. Sometimes a lack of preparation can distract and end up being a hindrance to worship. But whatever their hand found to do, Sunday night they did it with all their might. And, most importantly, it served the purpose of focusing our hearts and minds on worshipping Christ.

Sunday morning's text––Hebrews 1––set us up to think worshipfully Sunday evening. In mercy, He has indeed not been silent. If you missed Chris's faithful and compelling teaching from that text, you can read or watch it here: (God Made Known: He is Not Silent, Hebrews 1:1-3)

We'll plan to gather Saturday night at 5:00 for our Annual Christmas Eve Communion Service. We know you probably have a few things going on Saturday, so we'll keep that service to under an hour. Based on Christ being the image––the visible expression––of the invisible God (Col 1:15), I spent the morning picking particularly vivid scenes from the Gospels that communicate to us who this God is. I'll be brief, but I'm aiming for and praying that the Spirit would use those scenes to open our eyes and help us see God in Christ. Then, appropriate to the Incarnation, we'll taste and see the Lord's goodness in observing the meal He instituted for us.
Then, on Sunday morning we'll consider the Word made flesh––God made known––in John 1:14–18. As is our custom we won't have preschool volunteers Saturday night for the Christmas Eve service, but we will plan to have preschool workers for ages 0–3 Sunday morning. I'm grateful for those that volunteer their time and energy so graciously, especially during this season. Pray as I finish up preparations for both Colossians 1 and John 1 over the next few days. Along with Hebrews 1, these are mountaintop passages in the New Testament about the Son of God.
Chris sent a longer email earlier about tomorrow night's Caroling Christ. I've missed this tradition the past couple years, but eagerly look forward to the Lord using the voices of God's people to herald His praises in our community. Again, there's no greater sound on the planet than the redeemed congregation singing praises to their Redeemer. And if that's the case, why would we not take it to our neighbors that so desperately need peace, hope, forgiveness, and joy?

All of those gifts are found in Christ. If you missed that sermon, you can read/watch it here: (The Conclusion Is This, Ecclesiastes 12:9-14 I mentioned J. I. Packer's article on Ecclesiastes being his favorite book in the Bible. I think those two descriptors also capture what the choir aims for Sunday night. This year Jim entitled the service "Sing We Now of Christmas." As it has always been, the worship service is full of Scripture readings, congregational singing, and choir anthems helping us to remember the glorious truths of the incarnation. The children will also be singing an arrangement of Galatians 4, "When the Fullness of Time Had Come." Please invite your friends and family to join us. There will be childcare for ages 0-3. After the service, we'll gather for our Christmas Fellowship in the new Fellowship Hall. Please bring appetizers, finger foods, or sweet treats for all to share. Each year this proves to be one of the most worshipful moments of the Advent season.
At the close of the service Sunday, I said that Ecclesiastes wasn't a book about the incarnation. But I might be wrong about that, at least in the sense that it absolutely does communicate to us how deeply we needed the Word to become flesh. Over the next few weeks we'll consider that reality in a brief series entitled, "God Made Known." This Sunday's text is Hebrews 1:1–3. We'll also vote on the proposed budget this weekend.

I just read tomorrow night's chapter(s) in A Bruised Reed. What hope it conveys! Again I deeply appreciate those with an eye for that kind of thing––coupled with a servant's spirit––taking the time to beautify the building for this Christmas season. Speaking of Christmas, here is the sermon schedule for the final weeks of the year. Chris and I will consider a few passages on the Incarnation before we begin James in January. We've put together passages that emphasize this truth: in Christ's birth, God is made known.

Christmas 2022: God Made Known
December 18th: Hebrews 1:1–3 ( . . . He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature . . . )December 24th (Christmas Eve Meditation, 5:00 pm): Colossians 1:15 ( . . . He is the image of the invisible God . . . )December 25th (Christmas Day, 10:15): John 1:14–18 ( . . . We saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father . . . )
We will not have Bible Study Groups/Sunday School on the 25th (or January 1st), but will gather both mornings to worship together on the Lord's Day.
But before we get to all that, we have one more week in Ecclesiastes. I can't describe how encouraged I've been by your attentiveness to the truths in this book. If you missed Sunday's sermon on rejoicing and remembering, you can read the manuscript here: (Rejoice and Remember, Ecclesiastes 11:7–12:8) The video should be up later in the week.
Alongside the Christmas decór, and full announcement sheet, you knew it was the end of the year Sunday because you heard about the 2023 budget. I greatly appreciate the calculated, conservative, and yet forward–thinking approach our finance deacons and elders took when preparing this year's budget. As Jay noted, we don't have to talk about this subject often because of this body's continued faithfulness. Thank you. We'll vote on the 2023 budget on December 18th.
Other Christmas–time dates:

December 18th: Christmas Choral Program/Church–Wide Fellowship (6:00 pm)December 21st: Caroling Christ at Saddle Creek (6:30 pm)
That's enough for now. And then Chris reoriented us from the truth of Ecclesiastes 11:3, saying this, "Our Father, who made this world and who patiently bears all who live in it––He kindly gives life to the fool–made–friend and is at work to grant a heart of wisdom to see clear and walk best." Unsurprisingly, it's the same counsel the Preacher gave us back in chapter 7:13–14. In essence: know that God is sovereign and trust His wisdom over our own.

I hope that Sunday's sermon, and this series, have ministered to you as Chris's did to me. If you missed that particular message, you can watch or read it here: (Wise Footing Amid God’s Mysteries - Ecclesiastes 11:1–6)
There are only two sermons left in Ecclesiastes, both of which seek to build after the long demolition process. This weekend we'll look at 11:7–12:8, including the instruction to Remember also your Creator (Eccl. 12:1). Then we'll spend a couple weeks considering the Incarnation. Then we'll begin the book of James after the first of the year. For a heads up as to where we're headed in 2023, the plan the elders discussed Sunday included preaching through James, then Jonah, and, Lord willing, beginning a study through the Christ–exalting book of Hebrews toward the latter half of 2023.
As we're looking ahead, December is here, so make sure you have the Christmas Choral program down for December 18th, Caroling Christ at Saddle Creek on December 21st, and our annual Christmas Eve service on the 24th at 5 pm. More details on each of those dates to come.
To continue looking ahead, this coming Sunday we'll present the planned 2023 budget for your consideration. I'm grateful for the decades of faithfulness from this body in this particular area. The Lord has been kind, and continues to be so. Speaking of His provision, I told you Sunday that David Johnson's house was supposed to go on the market this week but already has a contract on it. Again, I don't know how that works, but I'm thankful! We've been praying the Lord would continue to make the Johnsons move to Memphis seamless. Let's continue praying for them. The plan is for them to join us right after the first of the year.
Tomorrow night: Chick–fil–a, The Bruised Reed, Wisdom Wednesdays, and This Changes Everything for the teenagers.
I deeply love the privilege of serving this body. I do hope the truths in that passage, and the truths of that passage fulfilled in Christ Jesus, help you to live with His joy in the midst of vanity. If you missed that sermon, you can catch up with it on the South Woods app or at this link: https://southwoodsbc.org/media/7q7z4yb/enjoy-life-under-the-sun (manuscript attached).
I'll pick up with the next text in Ecclesiastes this coming Sunday morning (9:13–10:20).

Over the weekend two different teachers in our children's ministry shared particular ways the Lord was working in their classroom that deeply encouraged me. Would you commit to pray for these faithful men and women that invest in our children? Pray in particular that the Lord might use those teachers to clarify what it means to be a follower of Christ. And that the Spirit might do His work on unbelieving hearts. We long to see our church full of young men and women bowing their hearts to King Jesus.

Speaking of young men and women, and those that invest in them, I spent some time earlier today on the phone with David Johnson. One thing I told them is that, though I always know what hymns we're going to sing, I don't always remember the particulars of each verse. But after immersing myself in Ecclesiastes 7 all week, I was overwhelmed by the connections in the third verse: "Each strand of sorrow has a place within this tapestry of grace; so through the trials I choose to say, 'Your perfect will in Your perfect way.'" I found so much encouragement in seeing and hearing you all sing each of the thoughtful hymns we sang together Sunday.
I should also say, of all the texts in Ecclesiastes, chapter 7 intimidated me the most. But the Lord often meets us in His might when we recognize our need even more acutely. If you missed Sunday's sermon, you can read or watch it here: (Limited Wisdom, Ecclesiastes 7:1-19)
It's hard to believe, but November is here. And that means Christmas music is on the horizon. I was excited to hear the children's choir practicing Sunday morning. So, go ahead and mark your calendars for December 18th, when both the adult choir and the children's choir will sing anthems about the incarnation of Christ.
Speaking of that, we actually only have 6 more sermons in Ecclesiastes. Then we'll have a couple of sermons on the incarnation in December. Then, Lord willing, we'll begin the book of James in January. The elders thought a New Testament wisdom book might be a good follow–up to Ecclesiastes. We also thought it might pair well with finishing up Romans. Don't tell Luther!
Speaking of Luther, I actually did look for a bit last week for some connection between the Reformation and Ecclesiastes 7. I found some stuff that sort of fit, but with a sermon that covers 29 verses, a number of tangents end up on the "cutting room floor." Nonetheless, I did attach to this email something I wrote on the Reformation a few years back. In that brief piece, I argue that "The key to a spiritual reading of church history is reading it as if it were the unfolding of the providence of God. And if God is directing all things through providence, and we’re to meditate on all His works, we also ought to study church history." We're thankful for the Lord's kindness to us 505 years ago this week!

Speaking of dates, though it's been a few years, we're planning the Thanksgiving Meal for Sunday evening, November 20th. Finally, three weeks in, we caught a brief glimpse of the message the Preacher intends to share through this book. He disillusions us, in part, to show us reality. And he does so for our joy. I read a brief article yesterday where J. I. Packer called Ecclesiastes his favorite book of the Bible. And he said that for many of the reasons we've looked at. Packer wrote, "Whoever he was, Qohelet (The Preacher) was a realist about the many ways in which this world gives us a rough ride. But while temperamentally inclined to pessimism and cynicism, I think, he was kept from falling into either of those craters of despair by a strong theology of joy." If you missed Sunday's sermon on the experiment of Ecclesiastes, you can read or watch it here: (The Experiment of Ecclesiastes, Eccl. 1:12-2:26)

Speaking of demolishing in order to build, the construction folks are here today tearing up the old front sidewalk. After they do so, the landscapers will come in and grade the ground on both sides of the new walkway. (The ditches are not in the long–term plans). Then, they'll be able to pave the rest of the path into the building. There is indeed a time to tear down and a time to build up. I'm not going to make the mistake of presumption and write a finish date down in an email, but we are seeing good progress being made.

Speaking of dates, our fall Elder Burger is planned for October 23rd! Go ahead and mark that date down and plan to join us that early afternoon/evening time.

Speaking of time, this coming Sunday we'll study possibly the most well–known passage in the book of Ecclesiastes. Jim sent along his worship order this morning; The Byrds are nowhere to be found. Do be praying for Chris as he works through that oft–quoted but oft–misunderstood passage. Speaking of Chris, I'm grateful for him teaching the teenagers tomorrow night. As always, sharing that meal both nourished and encouraged. Once again we proclaimed Christ's death to one another. If you missed Sunday's sermon from Ecclesiastes, you can catch up here: https://subspla.sh/r2n7d37

Much of Sunday's text wrestled with the question of verse 3, What advantage does man have in all his work which he does under the sun? We saw, clearly, that the Preacher was in no hurry to answer. In this coming Sunday's text, he asks the question again, For what does a man get in all his labor and in his striving with which he labors under the sun? (Eccl. 2:22). And, then in verses 23–26, he finally gives something of an answer. Life's more gift than it is gain. I look forward to preaching that step toward "resolution" this coming Sunday.

As mentioned before, the message of Ecclesiastes helps us reorient our hope and it helps us engage with the unbelieving world. We desire to be a people that the Lord uses to lovingly and graciously expose the false hopes our neighbors and co–workers trust in. Knowing what they worship is part of our mission.

Speaking of mission, do be praying for Chris and Jessica Wilbanks. In the next few weeks, they'll head overseas for a meeting with some of the missionaries we help support. They'll also be spending time with some of our members that moved overseas. As you might assume, though we haven't sent a team over the pond in a little bit, we're aiming for that to be different in 2023. Pray for Chris and Jessica as they make preparations to head out, represent us, and encourage workers.

Yet, we affirm with C. T. Studd, "The light that shines farthest shines brightest near home." So, this coming Sunday Chris will lead a group to carefully, lovingly, and winsomely share the good news of living hope through a Resurrected King at Shelby Farms. Maybe Romans 10 spurred you to consider how you might share the gospel more faithfully. If so, let Chris know you'll be joining him (Sunday from 4–6).

David Gibson writes, "Ecclesiastes urges us to think about life under the sun from the perspective of life above the sun. There is a God in heaven, a wise and loving Father, who holds the righteous and the wise in His hands" (Living Life Backward, 120). For that reason, among others, we thought Andy Davis's book on heaven might pair well with Ecclesiastes. Jim will kick off the study tomorrow night. Do plan to join us. I think this topic could prove to be deeply encouraging for us as God's people. Again, as I said Sunday, you won't find lasting hope until you lift your eyes. I'm thankful Andy's sermon on Sunday night from Colossians echoed that message.

We look forward to seeing many of you tomorrow! "Welcome to Moe's" at 5:30; classes follow at 6:30.

Matt

I'm grateful for a church that listens attentively, thinks deeply about what God has revealed, and encourages one another to walk in the fear of Him. If you missed Sunday's introduction to Ecclesiastes, you can read or watch it here: (“Vanity of Vanities”, Ecclesiastes 1:1–2)

Speaking of a proper fear of God, Chris will conclude our study through Michael Reeves's book tomorrow night at 6:30. I mentioned Sunday that Chris and I have been discussing what kind of Wednesday night study would pair well with Ecclesiastes. After some thought, we landed on Andy Davis's book, The Glory Revealed: What We'll Discover About God in Heaven. Neither Chris nor I could remember doing a study on this particular subject at South Woods. And since we're talking on Sundays about the nature of what's currently "under the sun," it might be a helpful balance to consider the nature of our world when vanity itself blows away, when death dies, and when creation is restored. Andy's preached in our pulpit before––masterfully, by the way. Many of you are familiar with his work on memorizing the Scripture. We have those books on the book rack for purchase. We'll begin that study next Wednesday, a week from tomorrow.

Speaking of Andy in the pulpit, after our typical summer pause, we'll pick back up with our monthly Sunday evening services this coming weekend. Andy Fortner will open up that immensely helpful passage in Colossians 3:12–14 where Paul helps us know what we should "put on" as God's chosen people. I'm eager to hear Andy encourage us from that text. If you're trying to keep things straight, we're scheduling these monthly Sunday night worship services on the second Sunday of the month. So, put down October 9th and November 13th as future dates for the Colossians series.

I made a comment Sunday about control being an illusion. I don't think the guy on the skid–steer outside my window heard the sermon, but they are making progress on the drive today. We're thankful. And I'm appreciative of everyone's patience and flexibility this summer.

This coming Sunday I'll pick up with verses 3–11 in Ecclesiastes 1. And as he pointed out this landmark, or reminded us of that turn, the Spirit fed us. I appreciated in particular the way Phil highlighted Luke's theology that underpinned the book. If you missed that sermon, you can watch it here: (“Getting Our Heads Around the Book of Acts—A Conclusion to the Series” Acts 13:44-52)

We passed out a sermon schedule for the book of Ecclesiastes this weekend as well. If you didn't get one, it's attached. On that schedule, you'll see that we titled the series Under the Sun: Living with Hope in the Mist of Vanity. Maybe when you read that, you wondered, "Did Matt ask Debbie to print off a couple hundred schedules IN COLOR with the word 'midst' misspelled?" How futile! : ) While that's certainly possible, it's not the case this time. Vanity is something that we can't grab. It's elusive. It's also something that doesn't last. The idea, in fact, is not unlike what James says about our life: it's a mist. This is the nature of our existence "under the sun," whether we're talking about work, about relationships, about possessions, and even about knowledge. So, how do we live with hope, joy, or peace in the "mist" of vanity? That's what I pray we are pointed to through this thought–provoking book, inspired by God and neglected by many.

Deep thanks to Eric Singleton for putting together the graphic!

Chris updated me this morning on the long list of things our team was able to accomplish last week in Nashville. And since he can say many things better than me, I asked him to tell you about it:

Thank you for sending us on with prayer and resources to Edgefield Church in Nashville this past week! Though a few Advil were necessary for some of us, the Lord enabled us to finish all the projects the church asked of us. I would only echo a few of the staff members at Edgefield, who were "flabbergasted" at how these men were remarkably skilled and efficient in fulfilling the specific tasks asked of them! And more than this, along with their tool belts they put on the joy of our Savior as they worked. The projects were rewarding and the fellowship was significant. Thank you men for laying aside your time and spending yourself for the good of a sister congregation and for the glory of our King. Thank you South Woods for holding us up in prayer while away, which the Lord graciously answered in multiple ways.

Encouraging!

Tomorrow night: Chick–Fil–A at 5:30, followed by teaching and more fellowship at 6:30. It's also hard––nah, impossible––to capture decades of gratitude for his faithful labors over a lunch. Yet, I'm thankful we as a body attempted to communicate it on Sunday. Some of you worked for hours and hours on desserts. Some of you worked for hours on moving chairs. Some of you worked hours and hours on decorating. Some of you worked hours and hours on editing a video. And many of you poured sentences of thankfulness onto a card. As He has throughout South Woods' history, the Lord showed us much of His kindness on this important day. What mercy.

He also put on display His mercies in Phil's Christ–centered exposition from the book of Revelation. He took the book! If you missed that sermon, I heartily commend it to you here: (Why Should You Follow Jesus?, Revelation 5)

Sunday we look forward to picking back up in our series through the book of Acts. When we left Paul in Acts 21, he'd graciously humbled himself before his accusers, submitting to a Jewish purification ritual. Those moments in the temple were the last free moments of Paul's life. In our text this coming Sunday, the authorities seize and attempt to kill him. Further, the angry chants of the mob––not unlike Ephesus––return. But, as we saw in Luke's first volume, the enemy's continual plotting proves to be subplot. Our King does nothing but accomplish every single one of His purposes. Pray for me as I sort through that text and prepare to preach Acts 21:27–40. We'll also look forward to observing the Lord's Supper together.

This coming Sunday night, Chris will be preaching from Colossians 3:5–11, a highly practical passage that seems to connect quite well with what our Bible Study Groups are studying in Romans 7. Do plan to join us Sunday night at 6 pm to worship Christ and encourage one another.

Tomorrow night Abner's Famous Chicken will be on the menu, the adults will continue through R. C. Sproul's book on the Holy Spirit, and the teenagers and children will continue in their present studies. I'm personally finding much to rejoice in while reading through Who is Jesus? with the teenagers. If you need to sign up for that meal, please do so here: (Wednesday Family Meal link).

We'll look forward to seeing you all tomorrow night!

Matt

I shall not use this space to reminisce today but to anticipate the week and weeks ahead.

Tomorrow night we continue the study in R. C. Sproul’s book The Mystery of the Trinity. What a helpful study! There’s ample neglect on one hand, and confusion on the other about the person and work of the Holy Spirit. I’m glad that we can reflect together on the Spirit. Read over chapter 5 and come prepared to join in. Our teenagers are studying Greg Gilbert’s Who is Jesus? This book has been translated in many languages (lots and lots) and is being used of the Lord to teach thousands about the person and work of Jesus. I’m so glad the students are digging into this one. Pray that the Lord will use both books and accompanying discussion to bear much fruit in our lives.

If you’re interested in membership at South Woods we’ll be having four classes during the four Sundays of June during the Bible Study Group hour, 9:00–10:00. These classes are part of the step toward becoming covenant members of South Woods. Let one of the pastors know that you would like to attend starting June 5th. Of course, if you have questions, please don’t hesitate to ask whatever may be helpful to you.

The tender language of the Apostle Paul in 1 Thessalonians 2 gave us a great encouragement to live as Christians as we go forth bearing the good news to others. Pastor Matt helped us to see how in the provision of Jesus, we are able to pace our lives in walking worthy of the God who has graciously called us to His kingdom and glory. You can read or listen to the message here.
We’ll be out of our Acts series again this week, as I will finish up my pastoral ministry at South Woods by preaching Revelation 5. We’ve looked at this passage numerous times over my 35 years in the pulpit here, but each one takes a little different angle. That will be the case this time as well, as I want us to consider the pictures in Revelation 5 that beckon us to follow Jesus. Pray for this time that the Holy Spirit (or, as John put it, the seven Spirits of God sent out into all the earth) will manifest His power and presence among us.

I’m grateful for you and the years of your faithfulness to the body, encouraging my family and me, and serving Christ together. If you missed Sunday's sermon on that text, you can read/watch it here: (Christ, the Church, and the World, Acts 21:15-26)

I hope that you've been as edified as I have over the past few weeks by what the Lord is doing at South Woods. I mentioned a few things Sunday, but I merely scratched the surface. During our elders meeting Sunday afternoon, we spent a little time sharing some other things the Lord was doing in our midst. Chris then spoke, as he often does, apples of gold, "This is evidence of Jesus being among us." I couldn't have agreed more.

One such thing you may not know about is a new class meeting during the Bible Study Group hour, led by Bill and Cindy Starr. Each week at 9:00 they gather to focus on prayer, praying for missions, missionaries, our BSG teachers, our worship services, and for one another. Pastor Phil joined them this past Sunday and reported back to the elders how profitable it was for him. Even if you join that group to pray once a month or so, our hope is that this might be another opportunity for the body to intercede for one another and the nations. Like the church at Jerusalem in Acts 2, we want to be devoted to the Apostle's teaching and to prayer.

This coming Sunday we'll pause our Acts series, but not pause Paul, to take a look at 1 Thessalonians 2:1–12. That passage includes one of Paul's most visceral illustrations, describing his love for the church as that of a nursing mother tenderly caring for her own children. Pray for me as I study that letter over the next few days.

Sometimes I read the bulletin in my office and then pump my fist while no one's looking. Mostly that's when I see something Jim's picked out that fits perfectly with the sermon. This week it was seeing the VBS dates (July 13, 14, and 15). Do put those dates down on your calendar! My kids have been so looking forward to its return.

Tonight we'll gather to eat at 5:30, and then at 6:30 the teenagers will begin Greg Gilbert's study "Who is Jesus?," the adults will press on in thinking through "The Mystery of the Holy Spirit," and our younger kids will be meeting with their faithful teachers.

We'll look forward to seeing many of you again tonight!

Matt

We’ve waited a long time for warmer weather (we may still be waiting!) so that we can walk the park and try to have gospel conversations. We’ve seen some good opportunities in the past. Join others from South Woods on Sunday from 4:00–6:00 p.m. Let’s pray for the Spirit to work through our witness.

Be sure to remember that we’re NOT having STINT or Wednesday night classes for students and children tomorrow night. We look forward on April 27th to returning to co-ed STINT classes, student classes, and children and preschool classes ALL ON THE SAME NIGHT! The adults will be reading and discussing R. C. Sproul’s helpful and readable book, The Mystery of the Holy Spirit. This is a great time to make Wednesday nights a regular time to gather with the body. Plus . . .

. . . we start back with Wednesday night family meals on April 27th! That night will be on the house! We’ll get to field test our new fellowship hall area. We will be able to have those conversations we’ve missed for 2 years. Plus, we get to follow up by joining in classes together. Can you ask for more? Well, if you’re in choir, you can attend choir practice after the service! Okay, we’re ready for everyone to be together on Wednesdays. That starts next week!

We return to the exposition in the book of Acts on Sunday, chapter 21. Pastor Chris will be preaching. The guys meet at 6:30, along with the children for the last round of Wisdom Wednesdays. Thank you for adjusting your lives to accommodate the way we’ve had to do these classes for two years.

Mercy for Memphis starts back on April 24th, 4–6:00 p.m. at Shelby Farms. This is a great chance to talk about the good news with folks meandering about. It might also be a chance to meet some believers and encourage them. I continue praying for a pastor that Andrew Harris and I met last fall. We’ve had several more conversations with him over the past months. You never know what might happen at Shelby Farms!

Also, in the same vein as Mercy for Memphis, we have another opportunity to serve with the Food Bank Distribution through World Relief and Redeemer Baptist Fellowship, to organize and provide food through the Mid-South Food Bank. This comes up on April 29th, with various shifts. See Chris for details.

Speaking of Chris Wilbanks, the church unanimously approved Chris becoming full-time associate pastor at South Woods! We’re thankful for Chris and Jessica and their family. While we’re not welcoming them to the church (they’ve been here 20 years), we’re rejoicing with them in this expanded opportunity to serve the body at South Woods.

We get started on April 27th with family night dinner (see what Chris has come up with), a new STINT (R.C. Sproul’s The Mystery of the Holy Spirit), a full round of children and teenager’s classes, and choir practice (after STINT). The first meal on the 27th is free! We will not be meeting on Wednesday, April 20th since so many of our regular teachers will be at T4G in Louisville, so take the night off and get ready to roll on the 27th!

Jim encouraged us on Sunday night to meditate on Scripture, to let it soak into our lives. I hope you’re doing that in reflecting on the passages that we’re considering on Sunday morning worship. Thinking on the triumphal entry is far more than a donkey’s colt ride for Jesus. We see both His majesty and humility. And we see God’s faithfulness to a 500-year old prophecy. Be encouraged as you think on the Word! You can check out the sermon here.

We look forward to Friday night at 6:30 for our Good Friday Service. Pastor Matt will be preaching on one of my favorite passages, Romans 8:31–32. Pray for him as he prepares. I’m looking forward to expounding John 20:19–23 for Easter Sunday, as we think about Christ’s resurrection gifts. Thank you for contributing in such a tangible way to help us have a lovely place for disciple making.

We’ve waited two years for this Sunday, April 10th. For two years, due to Covid restrictions and building topsy-turvy, we’ve waited to return to our regular Sunday morning 9:00 Bible Study Groups. Finally, the time is here! We have all new rooms, beautifully prepared to join together—young and old—in studying God’s Word! Make this Sunday’s Bible Study Groups a priority. Adults through teenagers will be picking back up in Romans with three weeks of review. This week you’ll be reviewing Romans 1–3. Take time this week to read through those chapters, pondering them and thinking of questions you might have on the passages. Pray for those who will be teaching. Pray as well for our children’s and preschool classes, as they participate in a range of biblically faithful material.

Thank you to all who are teaching and leading classes. We’re so grateful for your patience and preparation in serving the body!

We get started with Passion Week Services on Sunday, as I’ll be preaching from Matthew 21:1–11 on the question asked as Jesus entered Jerusalem on Palm Sunday: Who is This? The following Friday—Good Friday—Pastor Matt will be preaching in the 6:30 Good Friday service. What a great opportunity to bring a friend to hear the good news proclaimed! Then on Easter Sunday, April 17th, join me as we consider John 20:19–23, Resurrection Gift. Three services during Passion Week give us an opportunity to bring along a friend to join us in worship.

Tomorrow night the discussion of chapters 5–7 and the conclusion of Taming the Tongue by Jeff Robinson continues with the ladies meeting at 6:30. The teenagers will be continuing their investigation of chapter 6 of Greg Gilbert’s Why Trust the Bible?

Thursday night at 6:30, the Ladies will join together at Betty Campbell’s home for a Missions Tea. Kristen Lowry in Kenya will be live chatting with those participating. She always has fascinating things to discuss about the work the Lord has given to her and Daniel in Kenya. This is a great opportunity to find out ways to encourage our missionaries!

I hope you’ve been helped by reflecting on Acts 20 as much as Matt and I have loved preparing (discussing it during coffee breaks) and preaching these rich texts from God’s Word. This Sunday was so helpful, as we saw how the Apostle Paul relied on the grace of God by the Spirit and the gospel to sustain and keep the church at Ephesus. That’s what we do too. Word and Spirit continue to sustain us as God’s people.

Warmly,
Phil N.
